I was just about to ask this, and overlay is generally for noobs. All the pros do freehand, look at tik-tok.

But in reality, utilizing numerous overlays, projections, and setups is much more intuitive and efficient than merely guessing where a border should lay. The best Cartographs shall always be those whom build upon the foundations of laid-out instructions and prior knowledge. I, myself, have made templates for maps. My extremely extensive knowledge of general topography and historical borders of various regions helps in part with this, of course, but overall an amazing map can only be achieved with intelligence, love, and perseverance...though, the first step is to always have a guide in-hand, rather than free-handing it.

Aguide is not necessary as long as you work hard on your borders.

I like this statement a lot, the problem is a series i did (Rise of Civilization) was based on 3000 BC - 2000 BC so there are no templates, it is very hard for some maps to use overlays, and now im working on an alternate post ww2 map which cant use overlays as its all made up.

I personally make every template I use, utilizing my own preexisting knowledge and varying Cartographs and research materials. Have you thoguht about making your own templates? For your 3000-2000 BC map, try using resources such as this, but as no established borders were used in that period of interim history, you may have to use your imagination a tad. Also: To create a template, open an image editor (preferably one with a Layers plug-in/function), and trace over the Cartograph you wish to use in your final Map the borders in which you wish to trace in the AtWar Editor (Remember to make backup files, and NEVER save over your original file. Also remember not to use your template map image as the final map image).

That's what I'm saying I have to come up with the borders so overlay templates from the internet don't work in that instance, i just have to freehand what would be a "sphere of influence"

Both, depending on the map. If it is a real world map, then overlay... if fantasy word, free hand.

even in world maps i get lazy and just free hand lol, and people can tell if you look hard enough, cause borders appear different than others in terms of detail, some days i do about 200 clicks per minute, others more like 50.
