As the Senate fleet crossed the straits of Messana on their way to fight Mithridates, Fenix thought it would be an ideal time to attack. This battle was quite furious lacking any strategy in a confined area. The losses were equivalent on both sides, and quite heavy. The best of their forces were arguably spent but Germanus felt he needed to keep on his journey to defeat Pontus.

Germanus arrived at Zacynthus and was informed that Mithridatic ships were headed to his position and were anchored at Methone. Germanus was able to quickly mobilize and capture all 40 ships and execute the rear admiral. Germanus was then informed that the mass of the naval force was continuing towards Zacynthus. Once again quickly mobilizing, his fleet overtook them. The Pontic fleet choose not to fight but instead defend against the Roman fleet off the coast of Greece. Germanus sent a small contingent of troops to the cliffs where the Pontic fleet was then under fire from two directions. Lucullus captured or sunk 90 ships and the next day found the admiral hiding in a cave.
Without their fleet, Mithridates sent terms to maintain his kingdom but to return greece and asia and pay 30 talents. Relatively light, Germanus had no choice due to the civil war.

Before the Battle of Tauromenium, Vergilius was furious with his Emperor. Vergilius had told Fenix not to intercept the fleet- these were Romans being sent to fight barbarians. Fenix, flanked by his officers, refused to listen. He and his cadre of followers began plotting where to intercept only for Vergilius to interrupt again, once more trying to speak reason into the Emperor. The room grew silent. Fenix replied bluntly ordering Vergilius to leave the room. An argument broke out between the two until finally, another Optimates officer by the name of Geminus ordered Vergilius to be arrested. The guards listened and quickly penned Vergilius to the table.
"Is this what it's come too? You decide to fight Romans being sent to kill barbarians and now you're throwing me in prison?"
Fenix never responded. His eyes were black with rage. Geminus walked to his side and ordered Vergilius to be taken to the brig.
"Fenix, I've followed you since the beginning. Don't do this!" he paused
"They are not Romans, they are heretics. I am the Lord's prophet, refuse my orders and you refuse God.
...I thought you were a good man. I was wrong.""
Vergilius was taken off to prison, along with dozens of others to be crucified- the Revolution was eating its own children.
After the battle, Fenix thought the war could be won- the Senate fleet was routed, construction began on 3 more squadrons and the Pontic blockade held steady. But word filtered in that Germanus had continued on his mission and had not only broke through the Pontic siege but was getting ready for a final assault on Sicily. Fenix immediately ordered the fleet to sail to Asia- word had reached him that Mithridates was willing to cooperate with him. Back in Athens, Germnus recieved word of Fenixs' departure.
==Aboard the Senate Fleet==
It was a dark and dreary night. Dark clouds loomed menacingly on the horizon. Somewhere hidden behind the horizon, the rebel fleet of Fenix 'Caesar' was heading to Asia. The officers of the Roman Fleet had been locked in a meeting for hours now discussing their strategy. The mood in the room was as heavy as the approaching stormy clouds. The men were hunched over a map depicting the positions of both the Roman and Rebel fleets.
Germanus, standing a little away from his officers, was lost in thought. He gazed out a nearby window at his fleet. The greatest armada Rome had ever built. Over 230 ships had set sail from the staging point at Misenum. But over the course of three bloody battles over the last week the number had kept falling. There were only 120 ships left now and most had already sustained significant damage. The rebel, Fenix, had retreated to Sicily after their last engagement where he was able to add on to his depleted fleet. The Roman navy had no such respite. Fenix was now seeking to break out of his precarious position in Sicily in an attempt to reach the rich and relatively secure lands of Asia.
Germanus' reverie was broken by one of his officers calling out to him. The officer corps was once again recommending that an attempt to intercept the numerically superior rebel fleet was ill advised. But Germanus' thoughts once again returned to the battles of the past week.
And he couldn't help but think about all the men who had needlessly died. All because some rich woman had decided to be unfaithful to her husband.
"No, we attack Fenix at dawn", yelled Germanus.
"If we let Fenix get away now, his armies will grow exponentially. How many more Romans must then die to end this unnecessary war. How many more women must become widowed or children orphaned. Yes, we are outnumbered. But, if we retreat today, will you be able to honestly tell our people that we did everything in our power to stop this war. Our cause is just. The Gods will smile upon our endeavor. We are the Roman Army and we will never yield to our enemies!"
By some miracle, when the dawn broke, all the storm-clouds had disappeared. They were gaining on the mighty rebel fleet which was now in full view. The Roman officers moved about the ranks, encouraging the rowers to push harder. They'd be upon the rebel fleet by noon.
==Back in Sicily==
Vergilius was in solitary confinement.
After a few days of debilitating treatment, the door swung open- he was being rescued. After his arrest, moderate elements within Optimates had begun discussing the erratic nature of Fenix. Many had joined to save Rome- not kill fellow Romans. An attempted coup was in the works and Vergilius took command of the group in Syracuse. Massena had already fallen and falcons sent to the Roman army encamped across the straights informing them of the mutiny. But by nightfall, Fenixs' veterans had pushed back Vergilius crushing most of the auxiliaries- what remained were half their normal strength. Marius Godox- head of the Senate army, sent an elite group to cross into Sicily to see what support could be provided. Realizing the gravity of the situation, they facilitated Vergilius' escape.
==Near Rhodes==
Meanwhile Germanus and Fenix met just before sundown off the rocks of Rhodes. By this point Fenix had heard of the mutiny on Sicily. Germanus had clearly shown his military skill besting the Pontic navy and now his fleet stood before him. Looking at his men, Fenix realized the war was lost. He didn't have the money, the manpower, the infrastructure to engage a prolonged civil war.
He ordered the fleet to hold while his flag ship proceeded to a small beach head. Germanus followed and the two Admirals and a small group of me set up a meeting on the beaches of Rhodes.
Breaking bread, the two man sat down not as Emperor or Admiral, but as citizen of Rome.
"Fenix, this has to stop. Rome is too large to be ruled by one man. Continue this fight and I fear the Republic will fall. Our democratic system destroyed."
Fenix stirred the wine in his glass
[i]"The Republic is dead Germanus. It is corrupt, exploits the people, and will not survive. What I offer is salvation."
"What you offer is anarchy." Germanus said
"You really think your revolution can build a utopia? You're one of Rome's greatest tacticians- don't throw it away."
"If I go back to Rome at best I am thrown in a cell, at worse, I am killed!" Fenix cried
"And what of my men? The senate will not forgive them for this. You yourself have persecuted my followers for years."
"You would do anything for your men Fenix?"
"Anything"
"If you surrender," Germanus countered
I will give amnesty to all your men. You have my word. We have had our differences, but I swear I will uphold this pledge."
Fenix looked to his men on his left and right.
"Give me one last meal with my men, then, we will surrender."
Fenix gathered his men for one last feast. He had explained the deal that was made. All of his men urged him to fight but Fenix did not give in. WHen the hour ended, his captains returned to their ships. The plan was for the fleet to surrender ship by ship- Fenix was to go first.
As the flagship approached Germanus' Fleet, Captain Geminus ordered his vessel to proceed further.
Fenix saw this and yelled out:
"Geminus, stop! Combat is not authorized return to the fleet!"
"Forgive me your excellency, but this is one command I cannot follow."
Another ship followed Geminus, then another.
Fenix looked toward the Senate fleet and his own.
"You're right Geminus, it can't end like this."
Fenixs' fleet drove directly against the Senate fleet which began to launch a wide flanking attack against of the senate forces. Fighting began immediately with ships ramming into one another, marines boarding and slaughtering sailors, and archers firing fire onto enemy ships. In the chaos, Fenix caught the sails of Geminus' flagship.
"Is that the Senate's command ship?"
"Yes your liege." replied his faithful captain
The Senate flagship made the same observation. Both Admirals began giving orders to their men.
"Turn the ship 40 degrees starboard!"
"Have the archers replenish their arrow!"
"Order the marines to prepare to board!."
"Wait for them to get closer!"
"Fire on my command!"
"Fire at will!"
The two ships began with arrows landing on both decks. Fenix had his ship racing forward at ramming speed while Germanus prepared his men to board. The ships collided and marines began pushing and shoving with their shields. Both Admirals drew their swords and proceeded to lead their troops. Catching site of each other, the two began to duel.
Fenix was the better swordsmen- years of training had prepared him for this. But Germanus was younger and quicker. Fenix parried well but Germanus was quick enough to dodge his slices. Both men were able to land hits.
Around them, the Senate Fleet had surrounded Fenixs' forces and began to systematically destroy them. Fenixs' forces stood firm but began to break under the pressure. On the flagship, Germanus had pushed Fenix and his marines back. A lifeboat was prepared to launch and a soldier ran to assist Fenix.
"Do not pollute my duel!" Fenix ordered. Both sides began to gather around their dueling commanders. As the duel continued, Fenix began to tire while Germanus pressed his attack. FInally Fenix collapsed. Germanus prepared to give one last strike but was stopped by an Optimates soldier who ran forward. Fighting broke out again. Fenix was helped to his feet by one sailor. "You must live!" the sailor yelled pushing Fenix into a lifeboat. Just afterwards, the sailor was cut down. Fenix looked before him and realized the battle was lost.
"STOP!" he yelled. Both sides paushed.
"Enough, it's over. Let no more Romans die here today.""
Fenix was helped to his feet and soon a ceasefire was announced after 6 hours of fighting.
At the final summit, Fenix had his men swear they would surrender. Fenix was wounded- badly. Later that night, he began to develop an illness.
The following morning, as the rebel fleet began to disarm, Fenix called over a priest to give his last rites. After this, Fenix was helped to his feet while Germanus walked over. The two men shook hands one last time. Coughing, Fenix took out his dagger.
"You know what I want." Fenix stated.
"Help me, please."
Germanus nodded and walked to Fenixs' side.
Fenix threw his arms in the air and thrust the dagger into the side of his abdomen. Germanus drew his sword. Fenix proceeded to twist his dagger bringing him to his knees. Germanus raised his sword above Fenix. Finally, Fenix pulled the dagger across his gut while Germanus ended the suffering with a single stroke.
Fenixs' body was cremated, his ashes scattered out at sea. Word reached Sicily of their Fenix's last order. The rebel fleet joined the Senate's while the Senate army quickly began landing on Sicily without resistance. All across the island, thousands of Optimates loyalist began to commit suicide.
