Turn priority, can someone help me with this?

Hey guys', this has always been my problem, and now it's coming back and punching me in the face. Basically, my problem is what you guys' call "Turn priority" or something like that; the order of moves you do in your turn dictating who wins and loses a battle, the priority etc. Well the thing is, I played a game where I took it slow, and I did just that (amazing, right?), but I still got my ass handed to me. Am I missing something? Or is there a magical new factor I haven't read about?
